Outside Scholarships

The scholarship program is administered by PRLA’s charitable foundation, PRLA Educational Foundation (PRLAEF). It annually provides Pennsylvania students with the opportunity to further their education in the hospitality industry. Since the program’s inception in 2006, the PRLAEF has awarded more than $150,000 in scholarship monies.

The Horticulture/Botany Scholarship: Kathryn Giarratani Scholarship Fund of the Western PA Unite of The Herb Society of America was created at The Pittsburgh Foundation to provide scholarships to college and graduate students following a career path in horticulture/botany or related field. A one-year $1,000 award will be granted to the recipient.

The following criteria will apply:

1. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Western Pennsylvania.
2. Student is a full-time Junior or Senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree or a Post-Graduate degree in horticulture/botany/sustainability or related field.
3. Student has a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0/B.
4. Student is enrolled in one of the following schools: Arcadia University, Chatham University, Delaware Valley College, Elizabethtown College, Keystone College, Messiah College, Pennsylvania State University, Philadelphia University, Temple University-Ambler College, Villanova University, or Wilson College.
5. Student writes a minimum one page essay outlining career goals and objectives, expected coursework and why the field of study is important to them.

Awardee is encouraged to attend a meeting of the Western PA Unit and/or visit the herb gardens maintained by the Unit in Mellon Park and Old Economy Village.

Final selection of the scholarship winners will be decided (subject to the approval of the Board of Directors of The Pittsburgh Foundation) by a Scholarship Fund Committee. No member of the Fund Committee, or his or her immediate family, is eligible for scholarship assistance during his or her tenure on the Fund Committee.

The Pittsburgh Foundation shall notify the chosen scholarship recipient(s) of the decision. The scholarship payment will be made after The Pittsburgh Foundation’s June Board Meeting, and after the student verifies the school he or she will be attending. Payment will be made to the school for the student.

The Corabelle Chappell Memorial Fund Scholarship is providing scholarships for deserving students. The Center for Scholarship Administration, Inc. (CSA), a non-profit, independent organization is the facilitator of the scholarship fund. This opportunity is available for residents of Lackawanna County with a GPA of 2.5 or above.  Apply online.

Purpose and Name of Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship award is to provide financial assistance to a student to honor the life of Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who is credited for saving 100,000 Jews in Budapest from the Nazis. At the end of World War II, Mr. Wallenberg was captured by Soviet forces and was never seen again. The name of the award shall be the “The Raoul Wallenberg Scholarship Award.”

Selection Criteria Requirements

The following criteria MUST be met in order for an individual to be considered for the scholarship:

1. The student shall have demonstrated characteristics of:
   1. Good citizenship and community service
   2. Financial need
2. All applicants shall submit an essay on the importance of diversity and the role of tolerance in their lives or the world, generally.

Selection Criteria Preferences 

The following criteria provide direction on how the applicant pool can be narrowed during the selection process. These criteria do NOT exclude potential applicants outright, but demonstrate donor intent for preferred candidates:

Preference, in the following order, will be shown to applying students who:

1. Have been nominated by the Executive Director and/or Board of Directors of Friends of the Poor
2. Are a current or forthcoming student of Keystone College

Selection Procedures

1. Friends of the Poor and Keystone College shall advertise and distribute the scholarship application to all eligible students.
2. The student shall complete the application and forward it SAF.
3. SAF Scholarship Committee will be responsible for making the selection of the recipient based on the stated guidelines.
   a.) One (1) representative from The Raoul Wallenberg Scholarship Committee shall serve on the SAF Scholarship Committee, if this committee is making the selection. In the event a representative fails to attend the committee meeting or reply to requests for input, this requirement will be considered waived for that calendar year.
4. In the event that there are no applications received from students outside Keystone College, Keystone College shall be responsible for making the selection of the recipient based on the stated guidelines.
5. SAF will notify Friends of the Poor of the recipient of the scholarship, in the event the organization submits nominees.
6. SAF will send a letter of congratulations to the recipient with details on how and when the scholarship will be paid to Keystone College or the educational institution they are attending.
7. This award shall be paid directly to Keystone College or the educational institution they are attending for education expenses. When the recipient has education expenses at Keystone College or the educational institution they are attending, the student shall send a copy of an invoice to SAF who will then issue a check payable to that college or university.

The name of the award shall be the “The Tolerance Scholarship Award.”

   2. Good citizenship and service to others
   3. Leadership
   4. Community service
2. Current or forthcoming student of Keystone College
3. All applicants shall submit an essay on the importance of diversity and the role of tolerance in their lives or the world, generally.

Selection Criteria Preferences 

The following criteria provide direction on how the applicant pool can be narrowed during the selection process. These criteria do NOT exclude potential applicants outright, but demonstrate donor intent for preferred candidates:

Preference, in the following order, will be shown to applying students who:

2. Have been nominated by The Map Program in Philadelphia.
3. Have a demonstrated financial need.

2. SAF Scholarship Committee will be responsible for making the selection of the recipient based on the stated guidelines.
   a). One (1) representative from The Tolerance Scholarship Committee shall serve on the SAF Scholarship Committee, if this committee is making the selection. The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP), the only statewide organization that serves exclusively the interests of private higher education within the Commonwealth, exists to complement and support the work of campus leaders. These scholarships are reserved for students who have shown an extraordinary commitment to community service and who have demonstrated creativity in shaping their volunteer activities. The selection committee takes great pleasure in choosing scholarship recipients from among the wonderfully talented, caring students attending our member institutions. Each year the choices are difficult, but the results – empowering students to serve their communities – are well worth the effort.

• UPS Scholarship – This year the UPS Scholarship Fund will offer a scholarship gift of $ 3,000 per AICUP member institution, to be awarded to ONE student the school chooses.
• The Commonwealth Good Citizen Scholarship – This scholarship gift of $2,500 is reserved for students who have shown an extraordinary commitment to community service, and who have demonstrated creativity in shaping their volunteer activities.

The Monsignor Andrew J. McGowan Cornerstone Scholarship was established in 2007 by the non-profit community organizations that knew and experienced Msgr. McGowan’s unselfish support of his community. Monsignor McGowan believed in God, family and community. In his memory, the Monsignor Andrew J. McGowan Cornerstone Scholarship is awarded annually to students pursuing education at one of the regional academic institutions to which Monsignor devoted his time and service.

The Msgr. McGowan Cornerstone Scholarship Committee encourages students to live and practice their chosen profession within Northeastern Pennsylvania so as to make a lasting contribution for the improvement of their home community in much the same spirit as Monsignor McGowan. Recipient must have their legal residence within the nine (9) county territory of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

• The Recipient must have a proven moral and high ethical character.
• The Recipient must be a hard-working student, producing to the best of his/her academic ability.
• The Recipient must show a demonstrated financial need.
